Patient Information - Silicone Gel Breast Implants

Please note we only have information relating to our NHS patients who had their surgery at one of our hospitals in County Durham or Darlington. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has advised that there is no clear evidence to suggest that the Poly Implant Prosthesis (PIP) – Silicone /Cohesive gel implants are unsafe or that there is any health risk associated with the implants. However, it has been identified that the implants do contain a different silicone gel to that which had been approved by the regulators. Therefore, we understand that this could be a worrying time for some of our patients. If you do have PiP silicone gel implants you should have received a letter from us with further information last August. We will be contacting all of our patients identified as having PiP silicone gel implants again in the near future. If you have received a letter from us and know that you have PiP implants and you have any concerns, then you should contact your GP in the first instance and arrange for assessment. If you are unsure whether you have PiP implants: The Trust did not carry out any PiP silicone gel implants during or after 2008. If your surgery was during this time period then you will not have these implants. If your surgery took place between 2001 – 2007 and you are unsure about what kind of implant you have then please contact either your GP or contact the hospital using the following number: 0800 7835774.
