The Division of Medicine and Emergency Care is committed to providing the highest level of care to the population of County Durham and Darlington. We provide emergency (A&E), outpatient and inpatient care across the region.
We provide the following Services:
Accident & Emergency - Providing Care for seriously ill or injured patients.
Cardiology - a complete secondary care service for patients with cardiovascular disorders (relating to the heart and blood vessels).
Clinical Haematology - clinical services provide inpatient care and outpatient clinics. The laboratory supports the hospital and local GPs by offering a range of investigations and a blood transfusion service. We also provide a 24 hour consultant advisory service.
Dermatology - Our sub regional dermatology service (relating to the skin) provides care spanning County Durham & Darlington & South of Tyne.
Diabetes & Endocrinology - offering inpatient, outpatient and day care services for Diabetes and Endocrinology as close to home as possible.
Elderly Care - providing a range of services catering for the elderly population of County Durham and Darlington, supported by specialist rehabilitation teams.
Gastroenterology - Consultant and nurse specialist staff work closely together to offer a full range of inpatient and outpatient services.
Neurology - providing diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of disorders involving the central and peripheral nervous systems.
Rapid access service for medical assessment
Respiratory Medicine - A team of highly experienced Consultant Physicians supported by multidisciplinary teams (specialist nurses and other healthcare professionals) provide services across County Durham and Darlington.
Rheumatology - our consultant led service has dedicated clinical nurse specialists, additional specialist nursing support and therapies all of which provide complete, patient centered care.
Stroke Services - providing a range of services including inpatient, outpatient and rehabilitation. The service is supported by a team of Vasular (relating to blood vessels) Surgeons and specialist nursing staff.

We aim to treat patients as close to home as possible so provide outpatient and community facilities, including inpatients and day care, at Chester le Street and Shotley Bridge community hospitals.
