Family friends, colleagues, and the local community have united to raise funds for the donation of two recliner chairs to the Intensive Care Unit (ITU) at Darlington Memorial Hospital in memory of Alan Bushby, a cherished member of the Darlington community.
On January 12, 2024, Alan Bushby, aged 66, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family.
Alan, the dearly beloved husband of Julie, was a much-loved father to Stu, Ben, and Thomas, a dear father-in-law to Claire and Laura, and a loving brother to Colin. He was also an adored 'funny' grandad to Chloe, Katie, Sophie, and Amelia. Alan was a valued employee at the Tetley Tea Factory, where he made many lifelong friends.
In recognition of the exceptional care Alan received during his time in the ITU, funds were raised through contributions made at his funeral and various fundraising activities spearheaded by family, friends, and colleagues.
These efforts culminated in the generous donation of two recliner chairs to the ITU at Darlington Memorial Hospital.
Julie Bushby, Alan's wife, expressed her gratitude, stating: "We wanted to give something back as a thank you to the entire team of doctors, nurses, therapists, and all the staff at ITU at Darlington Memorial Hospital who cared for Alan. Throughout his time in the hospital, he was the most settled at ITU.
"So for us, it was a no-brainer; we wanted to raise funds to support patients and their families, and we hope these new recliner chairs will help make a difference. We're so grateful to our family and friends, to Alan's colleagues, and the pupils at the UTC South Durham who have all come together to raise money."
Ward Sister Sarah Sherlock expressed the hospital's appreciation, adding: "We are so grateful to Julie, the Bushby family, and all involved in raising funds for this generous donation of two new recliner chairs. The chairs are now in use for patients and families in the ITU department here at Darlington Memorial Hospital. They will assist with the comfort of patients as well as for relatives who want a more comfortable option for resting next to their loved ones."
Stewart Mitton, a colleague and friend of Alan, fondly remembered him, stating, "He was the life and soul. He was a lovely man. I've known him for 24 years. His jokes were legendary, and he was happiest when he was making other people laugh. Lots of happy memories, we all miss him."
