Hospital kitchen stars in BBC1 programme

A few weeks ago Darlington Memorial Hospital welcomed a visit from TV Chef and restaurateur Simon Rimmer.

Simon came and filmed a piece behind the scenes in the kitchens at Darlington and interviewed some members of the catering team for the BBC1 programme 'Food Fighters'.

The filming covered the whole food journey, from when it arrives at the hospital as raw ingredients to when it is served to a patient on a ward.

Darlington was chosen because it is quite unique in having its own kitchen and preparing meals for patients, visitors and staff all on site - about 4, 500 a week - and for the reputation it has gained for high quality food.

The catering team has been recognised with a number of different awards and achievements for the high quality food and service they provide and this was echoed during Simon and the production crew's visit.

You can see the final results of the filming as part of the Food Fighters programme being broadcast on Friday 15 July at 11am on BBC1.

'In recent times, I have utilised admissions to Richardson for respite direct from my fracture clinic, even at weekends. I have never worked anywhere with this efficiency before - it is reassuring and invaluable for the patient.'
