Introducing the Trust’s new Patient Safety Partner, Emma Robertson

We are pleased to introduce the Trust's new Patient Safety Partner, Emma Robertson.

This is an important role which provides an opportunity for the Trust to engage with and learn from the experiences and perspectives of the communities we serve.

The Patient Safety Partner role is a link between patients, their families, and our services and teams.

The role is designed to ensure that the voices of patients and their families are heard and integrated into the Trust's safety protocols and patient care strategies.

Emma is an advocate for patient safety, and will champion potential areas for improvement and ensure we continue to foster a culture of safety and transparency across the Trust.

Emma brings a unique and valuable perspective as both a mother of 5 who has first-hand experience of the challenges and needs patients and their families may face while navigating different health care services, plus a wealth of knowledge and experience from working with a wide range of businesses and charitable organisations across the North East as a business development specialist. Emma is hoping her experience as both a mother and in the world of business, will give her the tools to make a real difference within the trust.

Emma said: "From my experience as a patient and as a patient's mum, I have found that the different wards and departments across the hospital often become very focussed on just their own areas, which to a degree is understandable, but when you have a patient who goes through many different services and is on multiple pathways it is vital that all of these departments work together in the interest of the patient.

"I will be joining Quality Committee and Safety Committee to share my reflections and experiences , plus I will be working closely with both the patient safety team and the learning and disabilties team to share my first-hand knowledge and experience."

The role is another significant step towards reinforcing our commitment to patient safety.

By incorporating the insights and experiences of someone connected to our patient community, we aim to create the safest, most responsive, and compassionate health care environment.

We believe the patient safety partner contributions will help prevent incidents and enhance the overall quality of care provided to our patients.

The Trust has plans to increase the number of patient safety partners to a network of five in the future.

'Care received was fantastic and I was very well looked after and very impressed.'
