Neonatal units awarded with UNICEF accreditation

Following a two day assessment in February 2024, we are delighted to announce that the Neonatal units at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust have been awarded Stage 2 UNICEF Baby Friendly (BFI) accreditation.

The accreditation relates to the education of our workforce to ensure that the UNICEF BFI standards are being met and implemented by all members of the neonatal team.

These standards ensure the promotion of close and loving relationships, the importance of breast milk and breastfeeding and supporting parents as partners in care.

The award also showcases the Trust's positive approach to implementing the BFI standards and how the neonatal infant feeding team consistently displays enthusiasm and commitment to providing an effective training programme.

The assessors commented that the passion and kindness of staff was evident when speaking to the teams on both units and their knowledge and confidence around the standards was very high.

UNICEF BFI has now recommended that CDDFT Neonatal service is eligible to progress to stage three assessment.

The Neonatal units are the first level one units in the Northern Network to achieve this stage and are working ahead of target to achieve full accreditation in 2025.

This is a great achievement for the team but more importantly by embedding these standards we know that we are improving the outcomes for the babies and families we have the privilege to care for.

'I would like to thank all the staff for my treatment and their professionalism.'
