Shining Stars - Leadership for Change Award

Winners fo the Leadership for Change Award

Chairman, Professor Paul Keane, and Chief Executive, Sue Jacques, surprised the advanced care practitioners in the emergency department at UHND, with their Leadership for Change award.

The advanced Care Practitioners work at junior doctor level assessing and managing the 'Major type' patients in emergency medicine.  Sarah Clarke, who nominated them for the Leadership for Change award, was delighted with their win. "This new, innovative role not only provides an excellent experience for our patients but also offers excellent career development opportunities for Nurse Practitioners with appropriate skills and qualifications.  Working independently and with a high degree of autonomy, the Advanced Care Practitioners will assess, diagnose, manage and transfer or discharge patients with a wide range of undiagnosed problems.

"The idea for the new role came from ED consultant Jon Holmes but developing and putting it into practice has been a team effort.  I am so proud of them and am delighted they have been recognised through our staff awards.

Sue Jacques told the team how impressed she was with not only the concept but the difference the role is already making to the pace of patient journeys through the department.

'As I was very, very nervous, I must have been the worst patient ever and they were brilliant with me and I can't thank them enough - could you please pass on my sincere thanks.'
