Staff awards - shining star non-clinical

Shining star award - non clinical

Steve Lynch, senior health, safety and security manager, nominated Martin Kirton, a member of our security team at Darlington Memorial Hospital, for this year's Shining Star - Non-Clinical award, saying,

"Martin responded to an incident on a ward, where a patient had smashed a window and was threatening patients and staff with a two foot shard of glass.  Without hesitation, Martin stepped in between the patient and staff and disarmed him, putting himself in harm's way and giving staff vital time to move vulnerable patients.

The patient involved was acting very much out of character as a result of his condition and medication, which Martin realised was possibly the case, handling the situation with great sensitivity."

Presenting Martin with his award, Sue Jacques, said, "You showed such maturity, handling a terrifying situation calmly, impressive in anyone but particularly in such a young man.   This award is always very hotly contested so you have done very well indeed to win it.

"I would like to thank the whole security team for the work you do.  Staff have confidence in the team as a whole and in the exceptional individuals within it who should all be very proud of yourselves."

'As I was very, very nervous, I must have been the worst patient ever and they were brilliant with me and I can't thank them enough - could you please pass on my sincere thanks.'
