Dr Richard Reece

Consultant Rheumatologist

After completing my training in Cardiff I undertook training in General Internal Medicine in Northampton and Exeter before embarking on Rheumatology specialist training in Birmingham from 1993.

In 1995 I transferred my research in arthroscopy and synovial biopsies to Leeds under the supervision of Professor Paul Emery.

I completed my clinical training in Rheumatology in Harrogate York and Leeds.

In 1998 I was appointed as a Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Chapel Allerton Hospital Leeds.

I was appointed to my current post in 2010.

I firmly believe that care for patients with chronic rheumatological disorders is achieved through access to a multi-disciplinary team (Physiotherapy Occupational Therapy Orthotics Podiatry and Clinical Psychology). I also value highly informing and educating patients about their condition and would always encourage patients and their carers to become empowered and confident in effective self-management techniques.

I continue to participate in the research programmes the Academic Rheumatology Units at both the University of Leeds and the University of Newcastle involving Arthroscopy and using biopsies from the joint lining for diagnosis better understanding of disease mechanisms and to unravel the effects of treatments used in arthritis.

I also have a special interest in service improvement and have previously worked with the Department of Health.
