The Department of Thoracic Medicine offers a comprehensive assessment and treatment service for respiratory disease.
A team of six highly experienced consultant physicians supported by multidisciplinary teams provide services across all of our five sites within the Trust.
Outpatient chest clinics are offered from all sites on a weekly basis, as well as weekly broncoscopy sessions and pulmonary function testing from three sites.
There are dedicated thoracic CT slots, supported by weekly meetings with the radiology specialists to discuss imaging results.
The main services provided include lung cancer and pulmonary rehabilitation, with the respiratory team working closely with the regional oncology and thoracic surgical units in Newcastle and South Tees.
Consultants from these regional hospitals also run outreach clinics in our hospitals to enable patients to have some of their treatment and care closer to home.
Other main services provided by CDDFT include a comprehensive diagnostic sleep service thoracoscopy for pleural disease and cystic fibrosis services offering shared care with regional CF units.
The respiratory team work closely with the community nursing teams for some after care, following treatment.
