Bereavement

Darlington and Bishop Auckland have a Bereavement Counsellor, Sharon Tilley, who provides practical and emotional support following pregnancy loss.

Sharon offers a confidential counselling service for families following pregnancy loss, including miscarriage, ending a pregnancy for fetal abnormality, ectopic pregnancies, stillbirth and early neonatal death.

Although women are offered the Bereavement Midwife's contact details in all of the clinical areas following loss, women are also able to self refer. Referrals are also accepted from multiple professional agencies/individuals.

Appointments are available at Darlington Memorial Hospital (day time) and Bishop Auckland General Hospital (day time and evening).

Sessions are available for parents on an individual basis or as a couple and for family members.

Annual remembrance services are held at Darlington, Bishop Auckland and Durham.

The service also offers a support group which meets every two months starting from 6.30pm in the Methodist Church, Cockton Hill Road, Bishop Auckland.

There is also a nurse/counsellor within the Fertility Control Services who provides counselling before and after termination of pregnancy.
