How patients and their carers can help to improve the nutrition and hydration whilst in hospital

  • It is important for the patient to try to eat the nourishing snacks, fortified meals and fortified milkshakes provide at mealtimes. These are an important part of the patient's treatment plan whilst in hospital.
  • Family and friends may like to bring in extra snacks or drinks for the patient to enjoy. Please consider nourishing snacks and drinks which do not need to be stored in a fridge. For example cereal bar, chocolate, cakes (without fresh cream), crisps, dried fruit and nuts.
  • The hospital operates a protected mealtime policy. However, if the patient requires assistance or encouragement at mealtimes, the hospital welcomes a family or friend to visit at mealtimes to support the patient.
  • Where possible we encourage the patients or their family and friends to complete the food charts when the patient has had something to eat or drink.

'I feel it is important to relay my experience back to let the staff know they are doing a brilliant job! I would like them to know I appreciated all they did for myself, my family and our beautiful baby girl.'
