The Multiple Sclerosis service is part of
the County Durham & Darlington Community Health Services
specialist services directorate. Our team currently consists of a
multiple sclerosis specialist nurse with secretarial support. The
multiple sclerosis specialist nurse is a registered nurse who has
undertaken further training and is regulated by the national
regulatory body, The Nursing Midwifery Council.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous
system. It is the most common disabling neurological
disease among young adults and affects around 100,000 people in the
UK. It is most often diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40,
and women are almost twice as likely to develop it as men. It is a
life long disease and though its cause is not known and a cure has
yet to be developed, research continues.
How can Multiple Sclerosis service help?
The Multiple Sclerosis service works with individuals who have been
diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and their families and carers; to
maintain their independence and quality of life. The service works
as part of a wider partnership with individuals, families, carers
and other health and social care colleagues to promote positive
outcomes and self management. Multiple Sclerosis a complex disease

Where is the service provided from?
The Multiple Sclerosis service is based at Henson Close in Bishop
Auckland and is available to patients living in the Durham
When is the service provided?
The regular hours are Monday to Friday, 9 till 5 but early morning
and evening, are available if the core working day is not
How do people access the service?
The service accepts referrals from any source, the referral
