Community Dental Service

Community Dental Services

County Durham and Darlington Community Dental Service provides specialised NHS dental treatment for children and adults in County Durham and Darlington who have been referred by a medical, dental, health or social care professional.

This is not an emergency dental service and does not see patients who are unable to register with an NHS dental practice.  If you need to see a dentist urgently please call NHS 111 or access for details of local dental practitioners accepting new and emergency NHS patients.

Our staff has expertise in the care, management and understanding of people with special needs. The provision of this dedicated care is often more complex and challenging.

We can offer treatment for people with:

  • Learning difficulties - particularly moderate to severe
  • Physical disability and mobility impairments
  • Severe mental health problems
  • Severe or complex medical problems

Some of our other services include;-

  • School dental screening
  • Dental surveys
  • Oral health promotion

The service provides specialised treatment in various clinics covering the geographical area of County Durham and Darlington and also provides treatment to those patients that require general anaesthetic at any of three local hospitals located in Darlington, Bishop Auckland and Durham.

The Trust also employs salaried dentists that work in family general practices to assist with access in primary care.

Access to our clinics is by written referral only from a health, education or social services professional.

The Trust salaried dental practices can be accessed by self referral.

'I feel it is important to relay my experience back to let the staff know they are doing a brilliant job! I would like them to know I appreciated all they did for myself, my family and our beautiful baby girl.'
