Bone Densitometry (DEXA)

DEXA scan

The Bone Densitometry (DEXA) service runs at both UHND and DMH and is used in the diagnosis of osteporosis and the estimation of fracture risk.  DEXA scans use low energy x-rays of two different energies (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) to estimate bone mineral density.  The patient must be able to flat and remain still for a few minutes while the scan takes place.  The spine and hip are scanned and the results expressed as a score relative to the rest of the population.

  • The T-score compares the patient with healthy young women
  • The Z-score compares the result with an age, sex and race matched healthy population
  • DEXA
