In-patient services

Orthopaedics

  • We deliver orthopaedic services a cross all of our sites. The majority of orthopaedic surgery is performed at Darlington Memorial, University Hospital North Durham and Bishop Auckland Hospital.
  • Each of these sites has a physiotherapy team working each day of the week to help you in your recovery following surgery.
  • Their aim is to enable you to achieve a suitable level of independence whilst you are in hospital.
  • If you have more extensive rehabilitation needs, you may be transferred to our rehabilitation centre at Bishop Auckland Hospital, one of our community hospitals, community rehabilitation teams, or to outpatient physiotherapy services to continue your recovery.
  • The in-patient teams work closely with all these other services to ensure your recovery progresses suitably.

Orthopaedics early supported discharge team

  • We provide supported discharge and specialist rehabilitation for people following hip and knee replacement surgery (Derwentside only).

Palliative care

  • We are a multidisciplinary team which undertakes assessment, treatment and end of life care and support for people and their families at home. We have close links to the Macmillan team.

'In recent times, I have utilised admissions to Richardson for respite direct from my fracture clinic, even at weekends. I have never worked anywhere with this efficiency before - it is reassuring and invaluable for the patient.'
