Setting up and Managing a Project

First thing to do:

Come and have a chat with the R&D Department (contact the Manager, Assistant Manager or Research Promoter)

Develop your idea:

  • Discuss your thoughts with others in your department
  • Review the literature; library, systematic reviews, websites
  • Turn your ideas in to questions

Design your research:

  • What are main aims and objectives?
  • How will you measure them?
  • Who will participate?
  • Questionnaires/surveys/interventions?
  • Sampling?
  • Statistical relevance?
  • Will you collaborate with others? Multicentre study?
  • Qualitative and Quantitative research methods?

Writing your research proposal:

  • Protocol - What? Why? How?
  • Consent Form
  • Participant Information Sheets
  • Any questionnaires/surveys
  • GP Letter
  • Funding (see the funding tab for more information)
  • IRAS (see training tab for more information)

Submission and approval process:

  • All research (including student research) in the Trust is considered and approved by the research review board (RRB) prior to submission to a Research Ethics Committee (REC).
  • RRB meets monthly and undertakes peer review and research governance check.
  • Provisional approval letter or deferred letter.
  • Once provisionally approved - then submit to REC (if applicable) for ethical review.
  • Once a favourable ethical opinion has been granted a trust research approval letter is issued.
  • Study can start!
