SAS Doctors

Specialty and Associate Specialist

My name is Heather I am an SAS doctor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology based at University Hospital North Durham. My career path started fairly conventionally entering Speciality training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology directly after finishing Foundation training. Returning to work following maternity leave, as an ST6 trainee, I began to find it increasingly difficult to continue with a formal training path. I was fortunate enough to be supported by my consultant colleagues to embark on a career as an SAS doctor and develop my skills as a senior doctor at a pace that suited my own circumstances rather than those of the training programme. In addition to my clinical roles I am already heavily involved in medical education. I am Undergraduate Lead for Reproductive Health, an OSCE and MOSLER examiner for Newcastle University and Simulation Based Teaching Lead for Maternity. I am excited to be taking over the great work Ellie has already done as SAS tutor and look forward to supporting you all with your own career paths and development.

The links below will take you to pages detailing the SAS Charter and where you can access copies of the Charter. The Charter is set out to inform employers of what an SAS doctor is entitled to in terms of Job planning, study leave and support for career development.

The salient points are that all SAS doctors are entitled to Job planning for their working week and annual apprasial.

'I have to compliment everyone on their pleasant persona and their expertise and knowledge. By the end of the 5 days, I did not feel as though I had been in a hospital ward and was very relaxed.'
