County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT) is proud to celebrate the publication of Alvin’s Ears, a heartfelt and inspiring children’s book written by Dr Sharon Probert, a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist with the Trust. The book, which explores themes of bullying and bravery through the story of Alvin, a rabbit, is set to be released on April 24, 2025.

my picture.jpgDr Probert, who has been with the Trust for eight years, has a strong passion for tackling bullying, having witnessed first-hand its profound effects on young people’s health. In her role, she frequently treats children experiencing gastrointestinal issues, many of which can be caused or worsened by bullying. Her personal connection to the issue is deeply rooted - her own daughter, now a medical student, experienced bullying as a child and lives with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a factor that influenced Dr Probert’s decision to specialise in gastroenterology.

Dr Probert commented:  “I wrote Alvin’s Ears  as a way to explain to young children that its fine to be different, if fact we should celebrate our differences and embrace our uniqueness.  Also, the book attempts to show young children that you can affect others by the things you do and say.”

Alvin’s Ears is designed to be read by children independently or preferably shared with parents, carers, and educators to facilitate conversations about bullying, self-acceptance and resilience. Through Alvin’s journey, young readers can find comfort, understanding, and encouragement to face challenges with courage.

Jeremy Cundall, Executive Medical Director of CDDFT said: “We are immensely proud of Dr Probert’s dedication to both medicine and child well-being. We believe that Alvin’s Ears will provide invaluable support to families across County Durham, Darlington and beyond. By shedding light on the link between bullying and physical health, this book aims to foster empathy, awareness and practical solutions for children experiencing similar struggles.”
