The team on Starling Ward at Richardson Community Hospital has launched an inspiring Quality Improvement initiative aimed at reducing patient falls, particularly those occurring overnight.
Since June 2025, patients have been offered decaf tea and coffee from 3pm onwards as the default option, with the choice to opt out if they prefer caffeinated drinks.
This simple yet effective change is already showing promising results.
By reducing caffeine intake later in the day, patients are experiencing improved sleep patterns, which is contributing to a noticeable decrease in night-time falls.
The switch has also created valuable opportunities for staff to engage patients in conversations about falls risks and prevention.
Posters displayed around the ward help keep patients and relatives informed, and the idea has now been shared across community hospital teams as an example of innovation in everyday practice.
