The Department of Plastic Surgery marked another milestone in surgical education with the successful delivery of its 4th Annual Hand Trauma Workshop on Wednesday 25 June 2025.

Held at Prospect House in Durham, the event welcomed a cohort of surgical trainees and consultants for a full day of hands-on learning, simulation, and clinical discussion.

Accredited by BAPRAS for 7.5 Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits, the workshop focused on essential skills in hand trauma management, including tendon repair and fracture fixation, using advanced techniques and specialised surgical equipment.

Delegates benefited from consultant-led practical sessions, simulated surgical procedures, and in-depth discussions of real-world cases, all designed to enhance both technical proficiency and clinical decision-making in complex hand injuries.

The workshop was spearheaded by course founder and director Mr Omer Osmani, who praised Miss Jia Ling (ST3, Plastic Surgery) for her exceptional organisation of the event.

The course was supported by a dedicated faculty, including:

  • Mr J Auyeung (Orthopaedics)

  • Mr J Wokes (Plastic Surgery)

  • Mr H Khashaba (Plastic Surgery)

  • Mr A Appukuttan (Plastic Surgery)

Special thanks were extended to LEDA Ortho and Stryker, whose generous sponsorship and provision of equipment were instrumental in the day’s success.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with participants commending the course’s practical focus and the access to expert mentorship.

Many cited the workshop as a standout opportunity to gain confidence in core surgical techniques and to build professional connections within the specialty.

The event not only reinforced the department’s commitment to high-quality training but also contributed meaningfully to the ongoing professional development of future plastic surgeons.

Looking forward, the team is already making plans to expand and evolve the course further, ensuring its continued role as a flagship educational resource in hand trauma care.
