From Saturday 5 July 2025, Ward 3 at University Hospital of North Durham will temporarily relocate to Ward 6 at Bishop Auckland Hospital for approximately 8 to 10 weeks.
This move is part of a planned improvement project to upgrade facilities and ensure a safer, more modern environment for patients and staff.
Why the move is happening
The temporary relocation will allow essential maintenance and refurbishment works to take place at University Hospital of North Durham, including:
- Electrical and plumbing upgrades
- New flooring, lighting, and redecoration
- A modern nurse call system
- Refurbishment of patient areas and staff workspaces
- Replacement of clinical equipment
- Deep cleaning and infection prevention improvements
These upgrades are part of our commitment to delivering high-quality care in a comfortable, safe setting.
What this means for patients
All patients currently cared for on Ward 3 at University Hospital of North Durham will be transferred to Ward 6 at Bishop Auckland Hospital, accompanied by the same team of doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff to ensure continuity of care.
Transport arrangements and clinical support services have been carefully planned to ensure a smooth transition.
Ward 6 at Bishop Auckland Hospital has been fully prepared to receive patients, and additional support will be in place during the move to ensure safety and comfort throughout the process.
Looking ahead
The works at University Hospital of North Durham are expected to be completed by early September 2025, at which point patients and staff will return to the improved Ward 3 facilities.
We understand that change can bring questions, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of our patients, families, and carers during this temporary move.
Thank you for your continued support as we invest in better hospital environments for everyone.
