Recently, the CDDFT Diabetic Eye Screening team delivered a successful public health event at the Cornmill Shopping Centre in Darlington, bringing essential eye health information directly to local people in an accessible setting.

Designed to reach those who may not regularly attend clinic appointments, the event created a welcoming, informal space where visitors could learn more about diabetic eye screening, ask questions, and feel reassured about the process.

A mock screening station gave people the chance to see exactly what happens during an appointment, and visitors could explore equipment such as a Snellen chart, used to test vision, and a fundus camera, which captures detailed images of the back of the eye. The team also provided a range of easy-to-understand resources on diabetes and eye health.

DESP Event Darlington - Skye dog and Louise.jpgOne of the highlights of the day was the attendance of Louise, a patient living with diabetes, and her support dog, Skye. Louise shared her personal experiences of managing her condition and attending regular screenings, while Skye - trained to detect changes in blood sugar levels - helped create a friendly and engaging atmosphere. Together, they sparked meaningful conversations about eye health and encouraged more people to get involved.

Events like this play a vital role in raising awareness, breaking down barriers, and building trust in screening services. Most importantly, the event highlighted how early detection through regular eye screening can help prevent sight loss – a vital message that the team was proud to share with the local community.
