County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT) is proud to be at the forefront of sustainable healthcare, leading the way in greener surgery.

Back in 2014, CDDFT became one of the first NHS Trusts in the country to introduce reusable laparoscopic ports, dramatically reducing plastic waste and emissions, while saving more than £66,000 in a single year.

Now, over a decade later, the environmental and financial benefits of this change continue to grow, making a lasting impact on both patients and the planet.

Transforming Surgery Through Sustainability

Consultant Surgeon Andrew Gilliam explains how this innovative approach has transformed one of the most common surgical procedures, laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal).

By replacing single-use equipment with reusable systems, the Trust has reduced waste, cut costs, and maintained the highest standards of patient care.

“This is a clear example of how simple changes in clinical practice can deliver huge benefits for both the NHS and the environment,” said Mr Gilliam.

Playing Our Part in a Net-Zero NHS

This initiative is just one of many steps CDDFT is taking to support the NHS ambition of reaching net-zero carbon emissions.

By embedding sustainability into everyday practice, the Trust is reducing its environmental footprint while continuing to deliver safe, effective, and high-quality care.

Mr Gilliam added: "The climate emergency is also a health emergency. As clinicians, we’re seeing the impact of environmental damage on our patients. It’s our duty to act – sustainably, thoughtfully, and urgently.”
