County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT) is proud to announce that its Pulmonary Rehabilitation service has been officially accredited by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), recognising its commitment to delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred care.
The accreditation, awarded through the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services Accreditation Scheme (PRSAS) – a collaborative programme led by the RCP and the British Thoracic Society – represents a significant milestone.
It demonstrates that patients with chronic respiratory conditions across County Durham and Darlington are receiving care aligned with the very best national standards.
Demonstrating Quality and Compassionate Care
The accreditation process involved a rigorous review of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation service against seven core standards, including leadership and management, clinical effectiveness, patient safety, and quality improvement. Inspectors assessed patient pathways, facilities, documentation, and how the service empowers people to take control of their own health.
Chris Irving, Operational Lead Physiotherapist for the PR service, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to receive this accreditation. It’s a reflection of the hard work, dedication, and collaboration shown across our whole team over the past two years. There are very few accredited services across the country, and this award ensures that CDDFT PR patients are receiving the highest quality care.”
Making a Lasting Impact for Respiratory Patients
The CDDFT Pulmonary Rehabilitation programme provides vital support for people living with chronic respiratory conditions such as COPD, bronchiectasis, and interstitial lung disease.
By offering tailored exercise programmes and education, the service helps patients to build confidence, better manage breathlessness, and reduce the risk of hospital admissions.
Recent developments within the service include:
-
Expanded use of digital self-management tools such as the MyCOPD app
-
Clinical evaluation of emerging technologies like the BreathTec app
-
Strengthened collaboration with local academic partners, including Durham University
-
A renewed focus on reducing health inequalities and improving access across the region
Looking Ahead
With accreditation secured, the PR team is committed to driving forward innovation and excellence. Plans for the year ahead include the introduction of further quality improvement initiatives, expanded use of digital platforms, research collaborations, and ongoing patient empowerment through education and lifestyle advice.
