This Cancer Prevention Action Week (23–29 June), County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT) is supporting Balance’s new campaign: Let’s Talk About Alcohol and Cancer.

While many people are aware that smoking causes cancer, far fewer realise that drinking alcohol - even at low levels - can increase the risk of at least seven types of cancer, including breast, bowel, mouth, and throat cancers.

The facts:

  •  Any regular alcohol consumption can raise your cancer risk.
  • Alcohol is linked to more than 200 health conditions, including heart disease and liver disease.
  • Cutting back can help you feel better, improve your mental health, and lose weight.

How to reduce your risk:

  • Stay within the recommended 14 units per week (that’s about 6 pints of lager, 6 medium glasses of wine, or 6 double spirits).
  • Take at least three alcohol-free days each week to give your body time to recover.
