On Wednesday 4 June, the Diabetes Specialist Nurses Team at Darlington Memorial Hospital hosted a heartwarming event to honour an extraordinary milestone — celebrating Tony Hobson, aged 86, for living with Type 1 Diabetes for an incredible 60 years.

Diagnosed on 3 April 1965, Tony has faced the challenges of diabetes with unwavering resilience, optimism, and strength. In recognition of this remarkable journey, he was awarded the Robert Lawrence Medal by Diabetes UK, a prestigious honour reserved for individuals who have lived with diabetes for over six decades.

What made the event even more special was that it was Tony himself who reached out to the team, expressing his deep gratitude for the care he has received over the years and asking to organise the celebration in their honour.

It was a powerful moment of appreciation and a tribute to the positive relationships built through compassionate, patient-centred care.

Now thriving with the support of an advanced hybrid closed-loop system, Tony continues to lead an active, healthy life, serving as an inspiration to others; particularly older adults managing long-term conditions like diabetes.

Throughout his journey, Tony has remained a dedicated supporter of the diabetes specialist nurses at Darlington Memorial Hospital, never missing an opportunity to thank the team for their consistent care and support. His story is a shining example of how expert guidance, evolving technology, and personal determination can combine to enable long-term wellbeing.

Congratulations, Tony, on this incredible achievement — and thank you for reminding us all why we do what we do.
