Last week, the Trust marked Clinical Research Day with a visit from the Chairman, who spent time with colleagues from the Research and Innovation Team to learn more about the vital work taking place across County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust.

During the visit, Chairman Professor Richard Scothon met with John Mulcahy, Manager of Research and Innovation, and Clinical Research Nurse Nicola Hewitson.

He was given an insight into the broad range of studies currently underway and the difference research is making to patients, staff, and future treatments.

The Chairman expressed his admiration for the passion, dedication, and professionalism of the team and praised their commitment to driving forward innovation in care. He also shared his enthusiasm for the Trust’s ambitious plans to expand its research activity over the coming year.

Among the exciting projects discussed was the ORION-4 trial, a significant national study investigating whether a new cholesterol-lowering treatment can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes in people who have previously had cardiovascular disease.

The Trust is proud to be part of this important research, helping to shape the future of cardiovascular care.

Clinical Research Day was an opportunity to recognise the invaluable contribution of research to healthcare and to thank the staff, patients, and volunteers who make it possible.

Research and Innovation continues to play a vital role in improving outcomes and experiences for patients, and the Trust is committed to supporting and growing this work as we look to the future.
