Three runners from Darlington are preparing to take on an incredible 100-mile challenge on Saturday 16 May to raise funds for a new maternity bereavement suite for families experiencing the loss of a baby.
Supported by the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust Charity, the challenge will see the team run between hospital sites across County Durham and Darlington to raise awareness of the importance of compassionate care and support for bereaved families.
Their route will begin at Peterlee Community Hospital before continuing to University Hospital of North Durham, Chester-Le-Street Community Hospital, Shotley Bridge Community Hospital, Weardale Community Hospital, Richardson Community Hospital, Bishop Auckland Hospital and Sedgefield Community Hospital before finishing at Darlington Memorial Hospital.

Jamie Baldasera, one of the runners, said: “This challenge is about showing support for families across our community who experience baby loss. We hope the funds raised through the Trust Charity will help create a dedicated bereavement suite that can make a huge difference, giving parents privacy, compassion and precious time together.”
The runners aim to complete the full 100-mile distance in a single day.
Rich Jones, Charity Manager at the Trust said: “We’re incredibly grateful to the runners for taking on this challenge and helping raise awareness of the support needed for families affected by baby loss.
“The Trust is currently developing proposals around bereavement facilities within the maternity unit and, once plans are finalised, we hope to work with local communities, businesses and supporters on future fundraising opportunities. At this stage, we’re really thankful to the runners for choosing to support this important cause and for helping start those conversations.”
