A calm new space, Mindful Meadows, has opened on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at University Hospital of North Durham, giving patients, visitors, and staff a place to pause, reflect, and feel supported.

The room was created by trainee nursing associate Ashleigh Clarke, who spent a year fundraising and carefully curating the space.

Ashleigh said: “Mindful Meadows was created to give people a safe, calming space during what can be a very difficult time. Whether you’re a patient, visitor, or staff member, I wanted the room to feel welcoming and reassuring. Seeing people use and appreciate the space has made all the hard work worthwhile.”

Mindful Meadows features therapy colouring, emotional regulation activities, brain teaser games, a tea station, a white noise sound box, and an affirmation board, along with information on accessing further support.

Ward Manager Yolande Appleton added: “AMU can be a very hard place to work, so having a safe space for patients, staff, and visitors helps make the ward an even better place to be. This new space and Ashleigh’s other mental health initiatives have been warmly welcomed, and staff really enjoy being involved.”

The project benefited from guidance and information provided by the Trust’s Charity. The Charity continues to provide resources and support for initiatives that enhance wellbeing across County Durham and Darlington.
