Help save lives

This National Blood Week (9–15 June 2025), the NHS is calling on the public to help save lives by becoming regular blood donors.

Right now, just 2% of the population donate blood – but if one million people in England gave blood regularly, it would ensure a safe and stable supply for patients across the country.

Every donation can save up to three lives

Blood is vital for treating patients in emergencies, supporting cancer treatment, and helping people with long-term conditions like sickle cell disease. There is a particular need for:

  • O negative donors, whose blood can be used in emergencies when a patient's blood type isn’t known

  • Donors of Black heritage, who are more likely to have the rare Ro subtype urgently needed by patients with sickle cell disease

Donating blood only takes about an hour – and it could mean the world to someone in need.

You can also give blood at one of 27 NHS town and city centre donor centres.
