Ward 1 at the University Hospital of North Durham has been praised for its outstanding commitment to patient care and for going the extra mile in supporting patients with Parkinson’s and other movement disorders.

The Movement Disorder Team, including the Parkinson’s Team, has highlighted Ward 1’s exemplary practice, particularly in the care of frail patients. Their proactive approach is making a real difference to patient outcomes and experiences.

Key areas of excellent practice include:

  • Early mobilisation: Patients are encouraged to get out of bed as soon as possible, supporting better rehabilitation and recovery.

  • Bowel monitoring: Staff maintain detailed bowel charts, recognising that constipation can trigger serious complications such as delirium, infections, and reduced absorption of medications – particularly important in Parkinson’s care.

  • Timed medication: Staff use timers and consistent communication at handovers and team huddles to ensure Parkinson’s medication is given within the crucial 30-minute window, improving its effectiveness.

In addition to their clinical excellence, Ward 1 also demonstrated their passion and commitment beyond the ward by organising a successful cake sale in support of Parkinson’s UK.

Staff generously gave up their own time – including coming in on days off – to raise both money and awareness of Parkinson’s and the support available at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust.

This spotlight on Ward 1 recognises the positive impact of collaborative, patient-centred care – and the difference it makes every day.
