Professor Richard Scothon, Chairman of County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT), and Mr Frank White, the Trust’s Lead Governor, recently paid a visit to the Friends of Darlington Memorial Hospital to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution of this long-standing voluntary group.
Formed in 1948, the Friends of Darlington Memorial Hospital began as a fundraising group dedicated to supporting the hospital and enhancing patient care.
Their commitment to the community has grown steadily over the decades, and their efforts continue to make a significant impact today.
In 1997, the group launched a volunteer car service, designed to help patients who did not require ambulance transport but still needed assistance getting to and from the hospital. This service has become a lifeline for many, offering reliable and compassionate transport for those in need.
Now, nearly 30 years later, a dedicated team of 20 volunteers ensures that up to 25 patients each weekday can attend appointments safely and comfortably. Their work is a shining example of community spirit in action.
The service has received notable recognition, including the CVS Best of Darlington Awards in both 2005 and 2009, highlighting the value placed on the group's efforts by the wider community.
Professor Scothon and Mr White expressed their heartfelt thanks to the volunteers, praising their tireless dedication and lasting legacy in supporting patients and the hospital over so many years.
CDDFT is proud to work alongside such inspiring volunteers and extends sincere thanks to every member of the Friends group for their continued support.
