Improving the experience of individuals with a learning disability

The Learning Disability Maternity Diamond Standards have been developed to improve the experience of care for individuals with a Learning Disability using maternity services. They were developed by the North East and Cumbria Learning Disability Network in partnership with the Public Health Prevention in Maternity colleagues, Northern Clinical Maternity Network, the regional Local Maternity Systems and Geordie Mums (a self-advocacy group made up of mums with a learning disability).

The aims of the Learning Disability Maternity Diamond Standards are to:

  • Improve experiences of parents with a learning disability when accessing maternity care
  • Improve communication for parents with a learning disability when using maternity services
  • Improve use of reasonable adjustments in maternity services for parents with a learning disability
  • Improve identification of parents with a learning disability when accessing maternity services
  • Promote seamless care and reduce disparity of service

If you have a diagnosis of a Learning Disability, and would like support from the Learning Disability Team, please let your midwife know.
