Emergency surgery saves lives every day, and this week colleagues at University Hospital of North Durham (UHND) are marking Emergency Surgery Awareness Week (27 July-2 August) by celebrating the teams whose expertise, collaboration and rapid decision-making help deliver the best possible care for patients.
Led by Mr Khan, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Clinical Lead, Dr Barbara Skalska-Lis, Consultant Anaesthetist, and Dean Steventon, Clinical Educator for Durham Theatres, the week brings together perioperative colleagues for a programme of educational sessions, awareness activities and team-building opportunities.
Emergency surgery often takes place in time-critical situations where every minute matters.
Successful outcomes rely on the seamless collaboration of multidisciplinary teams, including surgeons, anaesthetists, theatre staff, nurses, operating department practitioners and many others, all working together to provide safe, high-quality care.
Throughout the week, colleagues will have the opportunity to share knowledge, strengthen teamwork and celebrate the dedication and professionalism of those involved in delivering emergency surgical care across the Trust.
The week also provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of timely recognition, rapid intervention and effective teamwork in improving outcomes for patients requiring emergency surgery.
As part of Emergency Surgery Awareness Week, the team will also pause to remember David Nelson-Vollans, whose legacy continues to inspire colleagues committed to improving emergency surgical care.
