Congratulations to the paediatric nursing teams on Ward 21 at Darlington Memorial Hospital and Treetops Ward at University Hospital of North Durham, who have been named our Team of the Month for August.

The teams were recognised for their work to improve asthma care for children and young people, using learning from the National Respiratory Audit Programme (NRAP) to identify areas for improvement and working together across both hospitals to make changes to practice.

Their work has already led to significant improvements.

The number of children and young people receiving an inhaler technique check before discharge has increased from 65% to 89.5%.

The number receiving a personal asthma action plan has also increased from 49.6% to 81.6%.

Both results compare favourably with the reported England and Wales averages of 62% for inhaler technique checks and 54.4% for personal asthma action plans.

The nomination recognised the commitment of colleagues across both wards, working alongside paediatric asthma and allergy nurse specialists and the paediatric practice educator.

Together, the teams have used the audit findings to share good practice, strengthen how asthma care is delivered and make meaningful improvements for children, young people and their families.

Members of the Executive Team visited colleagues on both wards to present their Team of the Month certificates and personally congratulate them on their well-deserved recognition.

A huge congratulations and thank you to everyone involved for their hard work and commitment to improving asthma care for our young patients.
