A County Durham man has transformed his health and wellbeing after receiving support through Wellbeing for Life’s Eatwise programme.

Mick sought help after concerns about how his weight was affecting his mental wellbeing.

Referred to the service by his GP, he joined the one-to-one Eatwise programme and, over 12 weeks, achieved significant physical and mental health improvements without giving up the foods and social occasions he enjoys.

When Mick was referred, he was living with weight-related health issues and had a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 45.79.

He admitted that motivation to lose weight had “yo-yoed” over the years.

After discussing his options with Community Connector Tammy Parke, he chose the Eatwise programme and began working with Wellbeing for Life Coordinator Julie Stobbart.

“Mick’s knowledge of healthy eating and nutrition was already excellent when starting the programme, but he struggled to put this into practice and make the lifestyle changes that would help him lose weight,” Julie explained. “The focus was on guiding and supporting him to make changes that felt realistic and sustainable.”

During the programme, Mick lost 26.25lb - nearly two stone - and reduced his BMI from 46.3 to 42.6. Food diaries proved to be one of the most effective tools, helping him stay accountable and review his choices during sessions with Julie.

Julie said: “His portion sizes reduced over the course of the sessions, and he found ways to change his choices without feeling as if he was missing out on his social life or compromising his enjoyment of life. One of his major wins was being able to go to a major clothing chain and buy clothes that fit him well for the first time in many years.”

The benefits extended beyond weight loss. Mick’s blood pressure fell from 152/85 to 120/72, and he reported feeling “more present and feeling better in myself”.

He has also made lasting lifestyle changes, including cutting back on crisps and no longer eating leftover portions out of habit.

Julie said he now feels able to balance his diet with healthier, more nutritious foods and has the confidence to get back on track if old habits reappear.

Reflecting on his experience, Mick said: “Part of my success was due to the fact I didn’t have to reinvent my diet like other weight loss programmes want you to, and I still felt like I was allowed to live normally.”

Inspired by his progress, Mick is now looking to become more active again, with plans to increase movement in his day-to-day life and potentially join a gym with his partner - something he had previously avoided.

What began as a period of concern about his health and wellbeing has become a pathway to renewed confidence, motivation and positive change.

For Mick, the Eatwise programme has provided not just weight loss support, but the foundation for a healthier future.
