County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT) has proudly renewed its status within the UK Government’s Disability Confident scheme and is now officially recognised as a Disability Confident Leader - the highest level of accreditation within the national initiative.
What is Disability Confident?
Launched in 2016, the Disability Confident scheme helps employers across the UK to recruit, retain and develop disabled people within the workforce.
It provides practical guidance, resources, and a clear framework for organisations to progress through three levels of certification: Committed, Employer, and Leader.
Each level demonstrates increasing engagement and action to challenge attitudes, remove barriers, and promote equality in employment.
CDDFT’s Commitment to Inclusion
Having previously held Disability Confident Employer status, CDDFT has now progressed to Leader level - a significant milestone that recognises the Trust's proactive approach and leadership in promoting disability inclusion.
As a Disability Confident Leader, CDDFT will continue to embed best practices across the organisation while also supporting and inspiring others by sharing learning and resources. This includes publishing relevant data and insights and working closely with internal teams and networks.
Looking Ahead
Working in collaboration with the Trust’s Disability and Long-Term Conditions Staff Network Group, CDDFT will be sharing a range of stories and case studies throughout the year.
These will highlight the lived experiences of staff and the impact of inclusive policies and practices across different departments.
In addition, tools and resources used to support staff with disabilities and long-term conditions will be made available to help promote understanding and encourage wider adoption across the sector.
CDDFT’s recognition as a Disability Confident Leader reinforces its position as an organisation that values diversity, champions inclusivity, and takes action to ensure that all staff can thrive at work.
