Every year on 8 September, World Physiotherapy Day shines a spotlight on the vital role physiotherapists play in helping people recover, stay mobile, and live healthier lives.
From supporting patients in intensive care, to aiding rehabilitation in the community, physiotherapists are there at every step of the journey – empowering people to regain independence and improve their quality of life.
At County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT), our physiotherapists work across hospitals, clinics, and community services, providing expert care through some of the most challenging moments patients face.
This year, we’re proud to highlight the work of two of our colleagues, whose dedication embodies the very best of the profession.
Nick Williams – A Day in the Life of a Rotational Physiotherapist
Currently based on the acute medical inpatient ward at Darlington Memorial Hospital, Nick Williams supports patients with both mobility and respiratory needs.
His role involves helping patients move safely, build confidence, and prepare for life after hospital.
Nick’s career in physiotherapy began while working as a healthcare assistant and physio assistant. Now, as a qualified rotational physiotherapist, he says the most rewarding part of his role is:
“Knowing I’ve helped someone regain independence and quality of life.”
Stacie Neale – Senior Medical Physiotherapist
Working across four medical wards, Stacie Neale provides care for patients with complex conditions.
She sets individualised treatment goals, supports recovery, and ensures safe discharge planning.
Having started her career as a physiotherapy assistant, Stacie has worked her way to a senior role where she also supervises and mentors junior colleagues.
For her, physiotherapy is about much more than physical recovery:
“Physiotherapy is about maximising a patient’s potential and restoring quality of life, often when they are at their most vulnerable.”
Celebrating Our Teams
Physiotherapy is about more than treatment – it’s about compassion, resilience, and empowering patients to take steps, quite literally, toward a better future.
This World Physiotherapy Day, we celebrate Nick, Stacie, and all our incredible physiotherapists for the extraordinary difference they make, not only today but every single day.
