
Emergency care
If you are scheduled for a procedure under general anaesthetic or sedation, you will usually be invited to attend a preoperative assessment clinic. You may already have had this appointment, or you might still be waiting for one. On this page, you'll find useful information you may need leading up to your surgery and to help you recover well.
If you have been given an appointment for a preoperative assessment, please bring a list of any medications you are currently taking. During the appointment a specialist nurse will ask you questions about your current health, review your past medical history and talk through the procedure you are scheduled to have, including what to expect during your recovery.
If you have already attended your pre-operative assessment and were given pre-operative drinks or bowel preparation, please keep the written instructions in a safe place. Some patients have several weeks between their assessment and their surgery, and it can be difficult to remember all the verbal information provided at the time.
