Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Diverticular disease is an umbrella term used to cover inflammation/infection caused by the presence of a "diverticulum" or "diverticula" in the bowel. A diverticulum is a small pouch in the side of the bowel and diverticula is the plural of this. Diverticulitis is another name for this inflammation/infection. Diverticulosis is the presence of a diverticulum or diverticular in the bowel. You may hear all of the above terms used.
Diverticular disease affects people in different ways. Some people rarely experience symptoms whereas others can experience symptoms daily. It is important to see your doctor if you are having symptoms as a flair up of diverticular disease (known as diverticulitis) can be treated with antibiotics.
